Hayden's journal describes an 1852 trip from Jefferson, Wisconsin to Oregon by way of Council Bluffs, the Platte, Scotts Bluffs, Fort Laramie, the Sweetwater, South Pass, Soda Springs, Fort Hall, Boise, Cascades, and Vancouver, where he found his brother Gay. The diary lists letters sent and records accounts and the names and addresses of members of the Hayden family.
